Which Skip Size Do I Need?

Choosing the right skip size saves you money and avoids the hassle of overfilling or ordering too large. Here’s a quick guide:

4 Yard Skip — Small Domestic Jobs

Perfect for a bathroom or kitchen clearance, small garden tidy-up, or a single room refurbishment. Holds the equivalent of around 30–40 bin bags.

8 Yard Skip — Medium Projects

Our most popular size. Ideal for home renovations, larger garden clearances, or clearing out a garage or shed. Holds around 60–80 bin bags.

12 Yard Skip — Larger Renovations

Great for bigger home refurbishments, multiple room clearances, or light commercial work. A popular choice for builders and tradespeople.

14–16 Yard Skip — Commercial & Construction

Suited to construction sites, large strip-outs, and commercial clearances. Can handle heavy mixed waste loads.

20–40 Yard Roll-On Roll-Off Skip — Major Projects

Our largest skips for major demolition, industrial, and large-scale construction projects. Available on a roll-on roll-off basis for ongoing site use.

Not sure which size is right for you? Call our team on 01744 758 349 and we’ll recommend the best option for your project and budget.

What Can Go in a Skip?

Most general waste can go in our skips, including:

  • Household and garden waste
  • Timber, wood, and furniture
  • Rubble, soil, and hardcore (in dedicated heavy waste skips)
  • Metal and scrap
  • General construction and renovation waste
  • Plastics and cardboard

What Can’t Go in a Skip

Certain materials are prohibited by law and cannot be placed in a skip. These include asbestos, tyres, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes, paint and solvents, and any hazardous or chemical waste. If you need to dispose of these items, we offer a dedicated hazardous waste disposal service — just get in touch and we’ll advise you.

Do I Need a Skip Permit?

If the skip is being placed on your private driveway or land, no permit is needed.

If it needs to go on a public road or pavement, you’ll require a skip permit from your local council. We can arrange this on your behalf — just let us know when you book and we’ll handle it for you.

Permit requirements vary across St Helens, Warrington, Wigan, and Widnes, so if you’re unsure, give us a call and we’ll advise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I keep the skip?

Standard hire is 7–14 days, but we offer flexible periods to suit your project. Just let us know when booking.

How quickly can you deliver?

In most cases we can deliver next day. For urgent requirements, call us directly and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Can I put heavy materials like soil or rubble in a skip?

Yes, but heavy materials like soil, rubble, and concrete require a dedicated heavy waste skip. Please let us know when ordering so we can provide the right skip.

Is skip hire cheaper than a man-and-van collection?

It depends on the job. For large, ongoing projects a skip is often more cost-effective. For smaller one-off clearances, our man-and-van service can actually work out cheaper — we’ll always be honest about which option suits you best.
