ZERO TO WASTE LANDFILL

End of Year Waste Guide: Clearing Out Before Christmas in St Helens

December is one of the busiest times of year for waste clearance, and also one of the times when leaving it too late causes the most frustration. Here’s a practical guide to getting your end-of-year clearance right across St Helens and the North West.

Book Early

Skip hire and clearance services get booked up quickly in the run-up to Christmas — particularly in the first two weeks of December. If you’re planning a loft clearance, a garage sort-out or a house clearance before the end of the year, book now rather than leaving it until the week before you want it.

What to Clear in December

Loft: The Christmas decoration run typically reveals how much other stuff has accumulated up there over the year. If you’ve got boxes you haven’t opened since last Christmas, that’s a good sign they don’t need to come with you into the new year.

Garage: One of the most common clearance jobs we do in December. Bikes that haven’t been ridden, garden equipment for a garden you’ve moved away from, flat-pack furniture that was never built — all of it can go.

General household: Before new things arrive as gifts, it’s worth clearing out what’s already there. Children’s toys, old electronics, clothes and household items in good condition can often be donated rather than binned.

What Happens to Christmas Waste

After Christmas, the volume of waste increases significantly — cardboard, packaging, broken or unwanted gifts, leftover food. Your standard bin collections may not be running to their normal schedule over the bank holiday period. If you’re expecting a large volume of post-Christmas waste, our bag collection or skip hire service can be arranged in advance.
