Bulky Rubbish St Helens: Council Collection vs Private Removal

Got an old sofa to shift? A broken fridge taking up space in the garage? If you’re in St Helens and need to get rid of large items, you’ve got a couple of options — the council’s bulky waste service, or a private collection from a local waste removal company like North West Waste. Here’s everything you need to know to make the right call.

St Helens Council Bulky Waste Collection

St Helens Borough Council does offer a bulky rubbish collection service, and it’s worth knowing exactly how it works before you book.

As of 2026, the council charges the following:

  • Standard items — £25.50 for up to 3 items, with additional items charged at £8.00 each (max 1 extra per booking)
  • Electricals, fridges and freezers — £17.50 per item (max 2 per appointment)
  • Sofas and upholstered furniture — £17.50 per item, due to regulations around Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

You can book online via the St Helens Council website or call 01744 676789. Items must be placed at ground level in your front or back garden, or on your driveway, from 6:30am on the day of collection. Crews will not enter your home, and if items aren’t presented correctly, no refund is given.

There are also size restrictions — items must not exceed 6ft x 4ft — and any damaged or torn upholstered furniture must be covered in plastic sheeting due to POPs legislation.

When the Council Service Isn’t Enough

The council service works well for the occasional single item, but it has real limitations. Waiting times can stretch to several weeks depending on demand, you’re limited in how many items you can book per appointment, and it won’t cover everything — construction debris, garden waste, and commercial items are outside its scope entirely.

If you’ve got a house clearance on your hands, a loft full of old furniture, or you simply can’t wait weeks for a collection slot, a private bulky rubbish removal service is often the faster, more practical solution.

Private Bulky Rubbish Removal in St Helens

At North West Waste, we collect bulky items from homes across St Helens and the surrounding area — usually within a day or two of your call. Unlike the council service, we’ll come to you at a time that suits, we’ll carry items out of the property if needed, and there’s no limit on quantity.

We handle everything from single sofas and white goods to full house and garage clearances. All waste is disposed of responsibly, with our zero-to-landfill commitment meaning your old items are recycled or reused wherever possible.

Before You Book — Consider Donating

If your item is still in good condition, it’s worth considering donation before booking a collection. In St Helens, organisations like TANGO in Haydock, Willowbrook Hospice, and the British Heart Foundation all collect good quality furniture. It costs nothing and keeps usable items out of the waste stream.

For anything that can’t be donated — damaged, heavily worn, or simply unwanted — that’s where we come in.
